Email Marketers Wake Up To Ideograms

I was noticing in my email this morning that a few different pieces of spam had much more eye-catching, decorative subject lines:

As you can see above, one email note for “magicJack Plus” included a little telephone symbol, while another one for printer ink included a little fountain pen nib symbol at the begining of its subject line.

It appears that spammers have woken up to the same concept that I wrote about in “Special Characters Are Lucky Charms for Twitter“. In a list of text titles or status updates, adding a little icon-like picture to just a few lines is very eye-catching.

Of course, if this becomes too common, the notes won’t stand out at all, and they’ll risk (more…)

Twitter Geolocation Randomly Moves Around

I have been experimenting with the “Add your location” setting on Twitter, and it’s not making a good impression on me.

First, it ought to allow one to set either an absolute location, or to request that it set location dynamically, based upon where your geolocation is. If you were a small business proprietor and desired to Tweet on your business account from home at night, you wouldn’t want your home address location to appear on your Tweets, nor would you want some location that’s different from your place of business.

Twitter does allow you to select alternate location on a menu from what they’ve automagically selected for you. (more…)
